The Water Garden - Filtration

FILTRATION

Any enclosed pool of water is subject to conditions that affect water health and clarity. Factors such as strong sunlight, rotting vegetation, windblown silt, organic sludge and algae can combine to spoil water quality.

There are three main types of filters

  • Mechanical filtration
  • Biological filtration
  • Ultra violet filter

Submersible filters perform two functions

  • Protect the pump from clogging
  • Filter the water mechanically and biologically

Mechanical Filtration
Water is forced through a foam layer where silt and debris are trapped. Most pumps have a foam filter that needs regular cleaning especially during the summer months.
Separate extra filters may be purchased for use in conjunction with your pump.

Biological Filtration
Microscopic, beneficial bacteria growing naturally in the filter media convert harmful toxins [ammonia and nitrates] created by pond inhabitants into safer nitrates that are a major component needed by plants.

Ultra Violet Filter
Green water is caused by excessive blooms of algae. The conditions are often perfect during the warm, sunny summer days. Green water algae's are often so tiny that ordinary filters cannot trap them. The pond water passes over the UV lamp and the result is either the algae clumps together so that it is caught in the filter or it sinks to the bottom of the pond. An improvement should be seen in days.
