Primecare was established 20 years ago as a concept to provide a one-stop medical centre, incorporating general practitioner facilities, medical specialist consultation suites, x-ray, laboratory facilities and a day-stay operating theatre.
Eight years ago work began to develop a full state-of-the-art hospital facility, as it had became apparent that a modern, high technology hospital was required in Whangarei to provide specialist and operative functions for the years ahead.
The result is Kensington Hospital (a four-theatre private surgical hospital) and a refurbished Primecare incorporating:
- General Practice
- Laboratory
- X-ray
- Specialist facilities (ophthalmology, gynaecology, physician)
The general practice has a high equipment specification, and doctors and staff available from 8.00am to 5.00pm Monday to Friday. After hours home visits are offered in conjunction with other Whangarei general practitioners.
The general practice also offers the following services:

- Minor surgical procedures including lesion excision, nitrogen cryotherapy and diathermy
- Screening medicine for cervical cytology, mammography, prostate cancer, hypertension, diabetes, asthma and coronary heart disease (including cholesterol/triglyceride problems)
- Sporting medical services
- Terminally ill patient medical care, in conjunction with community and hospice nursing care services
- Well Health annual medicals for both men and women
