Spring into summer

As spring givesd way to summer the colour in the Garden is intensified.  One of the wonders of this Garden is walking around in the evening, as I did last night.   The scents from so many different plants really pervaded the air, and the colours were magnificent - as they are of course during the day as well.

The Mollis azaleas are still flowering well, though they will not last very much beyond the end of November.  But, as always, as one lot of flowers and colour fade they give way to something different.  All the deciduous trees are now in full leaf, and the birds are busy nesting in many of them.  The flaxes are showing good flower heads so the tuis and bell birds will be enjoyig them very soon.

Many of the spring flowers are still blooming, but I suppose the 'piece de resistance' at this time of the year is the rose pergola.  The roses are just about at their best in their first flowering, and they are magnificent this year.  In fact this has been a very good year for blooms of all sort.

The wedding season is starting, and though we do not have a large number of weddings booked for the Garden, it is possible that if you were to visit on a Saturday afternoon you would find one in progress, and be able to admire the brides in all their finery.  But please, if you do come when there is a wedding ceremony in progress, we do expect other visitors to respect their space.

Do come and enjoy the Garden, and do come with the right change, $5.00 for each adult, children free, as there is an honesty box at the gate, and we are not always around to help with change.   Picnic-ers are of course always welcome.

Dreams come true

From 1990 on the dream started to become reality. First the land was shaped, then the geographical plantings; water features, and formal gardens followed.

It is interesting to pass from "New Zealand" to the "Oriental", through "America" to "Europe", "Africa" and "Australia" and into the formal gardens. Looking across the Amphitheatre and Lake it is easy to see what a peaceful paradise it is for weddings, concerts, picnics and functions. A haven for tourists too.

"So many unusual plants to see" says Gillian "which, coupled with the tranquillity here, makes this a real compliment to Nelson's other attractions".

There are a selection of photos of the Garden under the "Products" button, click there to see what the Garden looks like.
