Members of the Albatross Quartet

The Albatross Quartet is a vibrant classical chamber ensemble of four professional musicians based in the Wellington area. All our members are highly experienced performers, and have led their respective sections in highly regarded orchestras, both locally and overseas. They have also clocked up many hours performing a wide range of music in smaller ensembles, such as the Albatross Quartet.

The usual quartet configuration is two violins, one viola and one cello, although this can be varied on request. And if you really want to pack the punch, we can double every part and provide a string octet (8 players). On the other hand, if the setting is intimate and your budget limited, you might want to consider a duo (2 players) or trio (3 players) option.

Our instruments don't require amplication. We are exceptionally versatile and play where, when and what you want to play - whether it be elegant Elgar to accompany a wine-tasting, uplifting Bach for a marriage ceremony or fast and furious  gypsy music for a product launch. Every audience is different! We'll subtly vary the music to suit the mood and tastes of your guests.

The Composer in the Quartet
Craig Utting is not only the violist in  the Albatross Quartet, he is also a highly creative arranger and composer. Craig graduated with a Masters in Composition (1st class Honours) from Auckland University in 1987. His orchestral work 'Spirals' was a finalist in the Music 2000 Prize organised by NZSO and Concert FM. His latest work, 'Cirrus' is a finalist in the 2003 Douglas Lilburn Prize, as well as a finalist for the SOUNZ Contemporary Prize. He has had numerous other compositions performed and/or broadcast by Concert FM over the years. Craig lives with his wife Elizabeth Sneyd  (a violinist in the Albatross Quartet) and his five young children in Wellington.

If your favourite piece is not already on our repertoire list, Craig is more than happy (given a couple of weeks notice!) to arrange it specially for the Albatross Quartet. And if you want to commission a truly original work (for any combination of voices or instruments) to be presented and/or performed at your special event, then contact him straight away to discuss your requirements.
